Pune Love Marriage Ends in 24 Hours: Court Grants Swift Mutual Divorce After Living Arrangement Dispute

A marriage in Pune came to an abrupt end just a day after the wedding, as a doctor and an engineer who had been in a long-term relationship chose to legally separate due to irreconcilable differences about where and how they would live after marriage. The couple, who had reportedly dated for almost three years before deciding to wed, approached the court immediately after the ceremony and opted for a swift, mutual separation.

According to the proceedings, the issue surfaced only after the wedding rituals concluded. The husband informed his wife that he worked on a ship and could not clarify his exact posting locations or how long he would be away at sea at any given time. The lack of clarity surrounding their future living situation led to an immediate disagreement between them.

The wife, a medical professional with a stable practice in Pune, raised concerns about managing a marriage marked by prolonged and unpredictable distances.

Advocate Rani Sonawane, representing the wife, confirmed that the dispute revolved entirely around practical compatibility rather than misconduct.

“The marriage was a love marriage, and the couple had known each other for two to three years,” she said.

“But after the wedding, the husband disclosed that he could not specify where he would live or how long he would be away. That uncertainty made it impossible for them to start married life on common ground.”

Sonawane added that the decision to part ways was made without hostility.

“There were no allegations of violence or criminal wrongdoing. Both individuals chose to separate calmly, and the petition was moved on mutual consent,” she noted.

The court acknowledged the unique circumstances and considered applicable legal principles that allow mutual consent divorces to be expedited when the marriage is clearly unworkable and no further reconciliation period is necessary.

“The bench observed, ‘Where a marriage has broken down immediately and both parties understand that cohabitation is impossible, the law should not force unnecessary delay,’” the advocate recounted.

With this, the court granted permission for the dissolution to proceed, bringing the marriage to an official close just 24 hours after it began.
